Synopsis
The Beautiful Person (La Belle Personne, 2008) is a French drama by Christophe Honoré — watch it online on iFILM. Léa Seydoux made her film debut here as Junie, sixteen years old and freshly transferred to a Paris high school after her mother's death. Louis Garrel plays Nemours, a young Italian teacher.
Junie moves through school with a reserve that reads as beauty, and half the boys notice immediately. She starts quietly dating Otto, the least demanding of them. Then she sits in Nemours's class, and both of them understand something has shifted — without either wanting it to. Honoré never dramatizes the pull; he just lets it exist, heavy and inconvenient, in corridors and glances and lessons nobody is actually learning from.
Honoré built the film as a reworking of Madame de La Fayette's seventeenth-century novel La Princesse de Clèves — the same geometry of desire the characters cannot act on and cannot let go. With Seydoux and Garrel, the casting was the argument. Stream The Beautiful Person (2008) on iFILM.
