Synopsis
Suzanne's Career (La Carrière de Suzanne, 1963) is an early Éric Rohmer short you can watch online on iFILM — the second entry in his Six Moral Tales.
Bertrand watches his friend Guillaume, smug and casually cruel, pursue the gentle Suzanne, who at first looks like easy prey. Bertrand is certain he has her figured out. Rohmer quietly proves him wrong. The whole film unfolds inside the narrator's head, and nearly every judgment he reaches turns out to serve his own ego rather than the truth.
This is Rohmer years before My Night at Maud's — talky, low-budget, shot in crisp black-and-white, and already laced with his dry eye for vain young men. For anyone working through the French New Wave, it's a quiet glimpse of how one of its subtlest filmmakers began. Stream Suzanne's Career (1963) online on iFILM.
