Synopsis
A Good Marriage (Le Beau Mariage, 1982) is Éric Rohmer's romantic comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. The second of his Comedies and Proverbs, it looks featherlight while quietly tracking how a wish to be married curdles into obsession.
Sabine dumps her married lover and announces to her best friend that she is done with affairs — from now on, only a real husband will do. She doesn't yet know the man, but she is certain of the outcome. Her friend Clarisse sets her up with cousin Edmond, a busy Paris lawyer who is polite, evasive and in no hurry at all. The harder Sabine plans a future around him, the clearer it becomes that the romance lives only in her head. Béatrice Romand plays that self-assurance and blindness so it stings and amuses at once.
