Synopsis
Black God, White Devil (1964) is a Brazilian western you can watch online on iFILM. Glauber Rocha directed it, and it became a founding work of the Cinema Novo movement.
A poor ranch hand named Manuel kills the boss who cheated him and flees with his wife Rosa into the sertão, the cracked badlands of northeastern Brazil. They first follow a wild-eyed preacher who promises the starving a kingdom of heaven; his cruelty drives them off. Next they fall in with Corisco, the last of the cangaceiro bandits. Neither prophet nor outlaw offers them any way out.
Rocha shot it under a brutal sun, with non-actors and a score drawing on Villa-Lobos and Sérgio Ricardo, and the result reshaped Latin American cinema for a generation. It's harsh, furious and openly political — not a comfortable watch, but essential for anyone drawn to the radical filmmaking of the 1960s.
