Synopsis
Tromeo & Juliet (1996) is a Troma splatter comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Lloyd Kaufman drags Shakespeare into the grimy Manhattan underground, swapping balconies and sonnets for body piercings, dismemberment and punk rock.
Two feuding New York families, the Capulets and the Ques, hate each other and crank out cheap porn for a living. Tromeo falls hard for Juliet, the daughter of his father's enemy, and things spiral fast: forbidden lust, a monstrous tyrant of a dad, mutations, chainsaws and an ending the Bard never dared write. Will Keenan and Jane Jensen play the doomed lovers dead straight, which only makes the chaos funnier.
The script came from a young James Gunn, the future Guardians of the Galaxy director, and his taste for cheerful black comedy is already on full display here. Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister narrates the whole thing. This one is openly not for everyone: buckets of gore, filth and deliberate bad taste, exactly what Troma fans turn up for.
