Synopsis
"Sign of the Lion" (Le Signe du Lion, 1962) is available to watch online on iFILM — Éric Rohmer's debut feature, made inside the French New Wave and shot on the real streets of Paris. Pierre is an American violinist scraping by in the city, constantly borrowing from his working friends, propped up entirely by his horoscope: a Leo, he is certain, cannot lose.
Word arrives that his wealthy American aunt has died. Pierre borrows more money, throws a party, and waits for the inheritance. It doesn't come to him. Rohmer filmed the summer of 1959 in near-documentary fashion — handheld, natural light, real crowds — and the city gradually becomes the film's true subject as Pierre's world quietly comes apart.
Released two years before the celebrated "Moral Tales" cycle, this is where Rohmer's particular eye for self-delusion first shows up in full. Stream "Sign of the Lion" (1962) online on iFILM.
