Synopsis
Finding Vivian Maier (2014) is an Oscar-winning documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Directors John Maloof and Charlie Siskel follow the improbable story of how a Chicago nanny left behind over one hundred thousand photographs — and how that archive ended up reshaping the canon of 20th-century street photography.
Maier spent decades walking the streets of Chicago and New York with a Rolleiflex around her neck, shooting everyone she passed: drunks, children, her own shadow in a puddle. She developed almost none of it. Maloof stumbled on a box of her negatives at a storage auction, posted a few images online, and within weeks photographers worldwide were trying to figure out who she was. The film pieces together her life through interviews with former employers, children she cared for, and neighbors — and the picture that emerges is genuinely strange.
It picked up the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2015. The real tension isn't the mystery of her art — it's whether any of us really knew her at all. Stream Finding Vivian Maier (2014) online on iFILM.
