Synopsis
Profound Desires of the Gods (1968) is a Japanese drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Shohei Imamura. The film runs nearly three hours and takes place on a small, remote tropical island — a world that operates almost entirely outside the reach of modern Japan.
The Futori clan's daily life is governed by older rules: nature sets the rhythms, the taboos, and the desires. A Tokyo engineer arrives to sink a well for a sugar mill, a practical job that turns out to disturb far more than the ground. The island does not adapt to him; he begins to adapt to it.
Imamura shot entirely on location and worked in a documentary register, letting the world of the film set its own pace. He would go on to win the Palme d'Or at Cannes twice — for The Ballad of Narayama in 1983 and The Eel in 1997. This earlier film already shows his preoccupation: civilization as a thin layer over something older and harder. Stream Profound Desires of the Gods (1968) online on iFILM.
