About

Synopsis

The Green Berets (1968) is a US military drama co-directed by and starring John Wayne alongside director Ray Kellogg — watch it online on iFILM. Colonel Mike Kirby leads two Special Forces teams into South Vietnam: one assigned to hold a besieged camp against mounting enemy pressure, the other tasked with snatching a North Vietnamese general in a deep-jungle raid.

Wayne produced the film with direct Pentagon cooperation, securing access to actual Army hardware and bases at Fort Benning — something no purely commercial production could have pulled off at the time. Released in 1968 as public opinion on the war was fracturing, The Green Berets planted its flag firmly and without apology. It drew fierce criticism from reviewers and became a box-office hit anyway. As a piece of American cultural history — a big-studio war film that doubles as unapologetic wartime propaganda — it remains genuinely worth examining.
