Synopsis
The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972) is a chamber drama by Rainer Werner Fassbinder — stream it online on iFILM. Shot in a single apartment over 124 minutes, with six women and almost no men, it strips desire down to its most pitiless mechanics.
Petra von Kant (Margit Carstensen) runs her fashion career with cold authority and takes her resentment out on Marlene, her mute live-in assistant. Then Karin (Hanna Schygulla) arrives — 23, beautiful, and entirely indifferent to Petra's feelings — and the power dynamic flips completely. The woman who tortured her subordinate discovers what helplessness actually feels like.
Fassbinder adapted the script from his own stage play, and the theatrical confinement is deliberate: there is nowhere to hide and no relief valve. It is blunt, claustrophobic, and precise — the kind of film that makes you uncomfortable in ways you keep thinking about afterward.
