Synopsis
The Merciless (2017) is a Korean crime thriller from director Byun Sung-hyun that you can watch online on iFILM. Inside prison, everything runs through Jae-ho: his word is law, and on the outside a seat waits for him in a gang he fully intends to seize.
Then Hyun-su arrives — young, brash, unwilling to bow to anyone. Jae-ho takes the newcomer under his wing, grooms him as a partner and starts plotting a takeover of the syndicate. But each man is running his own angle, and here trust is the most expensive and most dangerous currency there is. The tighter their alliance grows, the clearer it becomes that one of them has been lying from the first handshake. Sol Kyung-gu plays the hardened boss, Im Si-wan his unpredictable protégé.
Byun tells it in a jagged, time-jumping structure, cutting between cell block and street so every betrayal lands as a fresh ambush — on the characters and on you. The film opened the Midnight Screenings strand at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. It's for anyone who likes cold, sleek noir about a male friendship that costs far more than any feud.
