Synopsis
Northwest Passage (1940) — watch online on iFILM. King Vidor adapted Kenneth Roberts' bestselling novel into a frontier military epic, with Spencer Tracy as Major Robert Rogers leading his Rangers on one of colonial America's most grueling campaigns.
The year is 1759. Langdon Townsend (Robert Young), a Harvard washout who got expelled for pointed political sketches, falls in with Rogers' company of hardened woodsmen. Their mission: march hundreds of miles through wilderness, strike the Abenaki settlement at Fort St. Francis, and fight their way home on dwindling supplies and fewer men. Walter Brennan plays Hank Martin, the steadying presence alongside Townsend. Lloyd Bridges appears in one of his earlier screen roles.
Tracy plays Rogers not as a swashbuckler but as a commander who cannot afford to let anyone see him falter — a quieter and more interesting performance than the premise might suggest. Vidor shot much of the film on location, and the exhaustion looks earned. A robust historical adventure for anyone drawn to the genre. Stream Northwest Passage (1940) on iFILM.
