Synopsis
A Real Job (Un métier sérieux, 2023) is a French comedy-drama directed by Thomas Lilti — watch it online on iFILM. Benjamin is a PhD student whose funding has dried up. Under pressure from his parents and short on options, he takes a job as a substitute teacher at a middle school. He has no training and no idea what he's in for.
Lilti, who previously made Hippocrate about overworked hospital interns, applies the same observational honesty to the education system. The classroom isn't treated as comic relief but as a place where real pressure lands on real people. Benjamin's colleagues — played by François Cluzet, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Louise Bourgoin — are teachers who chose this career deliberately and carry it with them. Watching them shifts what Benjamin thinks the job actually is.
