Synopsis
Giant (Handia, 2017) is a Basque-language historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directors Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi base their film on the real Joaquín Eleizegi, a farmer from Gipuzkoa whose body would not stop growing past eight feet tall.
Martín comes home from the Carlist War with a crippled arm and finds his quiet younger brother towering over everyone in the village. The countryside is broke and hungry. So Martín makes a deal: Joaquín will be shown to paying crowds, and Martín will manage the act. Their tour carries them across the fairgrounds and royal courts of 19th-century Europe, where fame and money slowly reshape what the brothers owe each other. Then the doctors name the price of all that height.
Eneko Sagardoy took home the Goya for Best New Actor as Joaquín, and the film racked up a stack of nominations at Spain's top awards. Patient, tactile and quietly cruel, it rewards anyone who likes their period drama unhurried. Stream Giant (2017) online on iFILM.
