The year is 2113. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disbands its covert paramilitary unit, the Peacebreakers, and the squad promptly vanishes. Five years on, a scientist named Milicia Stronskaya is murdered while carrying classified files on a next-generation surveillance system. The case lands with Chief Inspector Akane Tsunemori and the Public Security Bureau, and what looks at first like an isolated incident opens onto a far larger conspiracy. Kana Hanazawa voices Akane.

Franchise director Naoyoshi Shiotani made the film at Production I.G, extending the bleak dystopia first dreamed up by writer Gen Urobuchi.
