Tokyo, 1995. Mikiya Kokuto (voiced by Kenichi Suzumura), an unremarkable but sharp-eyed student, is the only one who bothers to talk to Shiki Ryougi — a silent girl from an old family who wears a kimono in every season. Their odd friendship lands right in the middle of a string of motiveless killings that leave no suspects and no pattern. The closer Mikiya gets, the less he understands who Shiki really is.
Chronologically this chapter sits earliest in the saga, so it's a clean way into the world. Maaya Sakamoto voices Shiki, Yuki Kajiura scores it, and ufotable's animation makes the night city a character in its own right.
