Synopsis
Operation Odessa (2018) is Tiller Russell's documentary, available to watch online on iFILM. The setup sounds invented: in the early 1990s, three con men set out to sell a Soviet submarine to Colombia's Cali Cartel. It actually happened.
The crew was a strange one. A Russian gangster nicknamed Tarzan ran a Miami strip club. Beside him stood a local playboy fixer and a Cuban spy who'd settled in Florida. The cartel wanted the sub to ship cocaine underwater, slipping past Coast Guard radar. Russell lets the players tell it themselves — ex-mobsters, FBI agents and prosecutors sit calmly on camera and recall how they nearly closed the deal of the century.
The director builds the film from interviews, wiretap recordings and archive footage, and never reaches for a lecture; the plain facts land funnier than any script could.
