Synopsis
Valley of Love (2015) is a French drama by Guillaume Nicloux you can watch online on iFILM. Two former spouses meet up in California's Death Valley because of a letter their son sent them — after he had already taken his own life.
Isabelle and Gérard split years ago and haven't spoken since. Their son Michael, a photographer, killed himself but left each of them a note: come to Death Valley, walk five spots off a list, and I'll appear to you. It makes no sense, and still they follow the route through 40-degree heat, relearning each other and finally saying what they never dared while their boy was alive.
Nicloux deliberately gave the leads the actors' own first names: Isabelle Huppert and Gérard Depardieu play something close to versions of themselves. This is a chamber piece with almost no plot, carried by two faces and the scorched desert around them. It screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
