Synopsis
The Falls (瀑布, 2021) is a Taiwanese drama by director Chung Mong-hong, available to watch online on iFILM. A mother and her teenage daughter end up sealed inside the same apartment under COVID quarantine, and the forced closeness drags into the open everything they spent years avoiding.
The daughter is used to a mother who runs the household and decides for them both. Lockdown breaks that arrangement. The mother slips into blank spells, anxiety and voices that aren't there, and the family roles quietly swap. Now the schoolgirl has to grow up fast and carry the woman she once leaned on. Chung shoots it with restraint, cool blue tones and long, patient silences.
Alyssa Chia and Gingle Wang lead the cast, and their performances lift the film from domestic drama into something genuinely piercing. Taiwan put it forward for the Oscars, and at the Golden Horse Awards it picked up several prizes, including Best Leading Actress.
