Synopsis
A Batyr From the Past (2023) is a Kazakh drama with a comic streak that you can watch online on iFILM. Elteber, a multilingual envoy of the Golden Horde who is used to settling matters at court, is yanked by strange circumstances out of the year 1311 and dropped straight into the 21st century.
From there the film leans into its best idea: a medieval warrior alone against modern Kazakhstan. Smartphones, traffic, unfamiliar manners — all of it baffles Elteber, and the historical mission he was sent to finish still hangs unresolved back in the past. He looks for a way home while slowly getting to know the country that grew up on the same land he once defended.
Directed by Darkhan Sarkenov, the picture handles its clash of eras without preaching: the hero is funny in his confusion yet never made a fool, and both centuries are treated with some warmth.
