The Swarm (Der Schwarm, 2023) is a European science-fiction thriller you can watch online on iFILM. The sea has stopped being safe. Fishermen vanish off the coast of Peru, whales ram boats in Canada, and creatures no field guide has ever catalogued crawl up from the deep. At first it all reads like a run of bad coincidence.
Scientists scattered across the globe — a Norwegian biologist, a French oceanographer, a Japanese engineer, an Indigenous activist from Canada — keep hitting the same impossible data on their own. Piece it together and the conclusion is hard to swallow: something ancient and collective lives in the abyss, and it has declared war on humanity for what we've done to the ocean. There's no one left to convince and no time to do it, while the coastal death toll climbs into the thousands. A handful of researchers board a vessel bound for the Arctic ice, toward what looks like the heart of the thing.
The series adapts the cult novel by German author Frank Schätzing — an eight-hundred-page eco-bestseller that sat unfilmed for nearly two decades. It's an expensive international co-production spanning eight countries, pitched as a bleak climate parable: less a monster from the deep than a bill nature hands civilization. Cécile de France, Leonie Benesch and Barbara Sukowa head the cast. If you want a disaster story built on real science rather than pure spectacle, this delivers.
