The season opens when a schoolgirl's body is found in a shallow grave, and Gently and Bacchus have to work out who ended a young life and why. The second story turns personal: Gently's old informant, a man called China, dies under suspicious circumstances, and the inspector treats it as a debt he owes. Two investigations in which the Scotland Yard veteran measures how far his partner has drifted from temptation.
