Synopsis
Inspector George Gently (2008), Season 5 is a British detective drama you can watch online on iFILM — four feature-length cases set in the North East at the tail end of the 1960s. Chief Inspector Gently and his sergeant, John Bacchus, work a country shifting under their feet.
The four episodes push into the era's raw nerves. A young black woman is killed after an all-night dance in Newcastle, and the hunt drags a quiet vein of racism into the open. From there the cases run through the smug protection of the so-called better classes, the kidnapping of an adopted child, and a mother-and-baby home where infants are taken by force. The last case turns on Gently himself: suspended, stripped of his badge, left to fight without cover.

Gently and Bacchus are thrown into an emotionally-wrought case when a middle class couple’s adopted child is kidnapped. It takes them to a mother and baby home where young single mothers are forced to give up their infants, where the shame of illegitimacy still burns the cheeks of single mothers.
