Robert T. Ironside, chief of detectives in San Francisco, is shot by a sniper on vacation. He survives. He does not walk again. Rather than accept a desk or retirement, he negotiates a consulting role with the department and builds a team: Detective Ed Brown, Officer Eve Whitfield, and Mark Sanger — a man Ironside vouched for straight out of prison. They run operations out of a converted van. Raymond Burr plays Ironside with flat authority — no self-pity, no inspiration-speech moments, just a detective who wants to keep working.
