Synopsis
The Teacher (Les Grands Esprits, 2017) is a French comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Olivier Ayache-Vidal. A literature teacher at one of Paris's most prestigious lycées gets reassigned — against his will — to a school in a tough outer-city suburb. His assumptions about education, class and himself don't survive the first week.
Denis Podalydès plays François, a man whose intellectual confidence reads as condescension the moment he walks into his new classroom. The students — kids from working-class families who have learned not to trust authority figures — are nobody's project. Abdoulaye Diallo plays the pupil who gradually becomes the unlikely bridge between the two sides. The film takes its time with that relationship, and it earns it.
Director Ayache-Vidal avoids the saviour-teacher formula entirely. What changes here is the teacher, not the class — and that shift happens awkwardly, stubbornly, in fits and starts, which is exactly why it feels real. Stream The Teacher (2017) online on iFILM.
