Synopsis
The Pebble and the Penguin (1995) is a gentle animated adventure from Don Bluth, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Penguin custom says a suitor must offer his beloved a special stone under the full moon. Shy, soft-hearted Hubie finds a perfect glassy pebble for the penguin he adores, Marina.
Trouble is, brutish Drake has his eye on Marina too — a vain heavy with a gorgeous baritone, voiced by Tim Curry. To clear out his rival, Drake shoves Hubie into the sea, and the little penguin washes up an ocean away. Now he has to cross ice, storms and hungry killer whales to get home, helped by a gruff but loyal pal named Rocko. Martin Short and James Belushi lead the voice cast, and a handful of songs make this part musical too.
Directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman — the team behind An American Tail and The Land Before Time — it carries their warm, hand-drawn 1990s look. Seventy-four minutes with no cruelty and no snark, just right for a family night with younger kids. It's a treat for anyone who misses cozy hand-drawn cartoons from before the 3D era.
