Synopsis
Patlabor: The Movie (1989) is an anime feature directed by Mamoru Oshii — watch online on iFILM. Set in a near-future Tokyo where giant mechanized suits called Labors handle construction, freight and industrial work, the film follows the police Special Vehicles Division as a wave of rogue Labor incidents begins to build.
The trail leads back to a programmer's suicide at the colossal Babylon Project site and a corrupted OS update hidden inside thousands of deployed Labors across the city. Officers Noa Izumi and Asuma Shinohara work out what a dead man hid in the machines — and how little time remains before it triggers.
Oshii made this six years before Ghost in the Shell, and the signature is already there: long environmental shots, spare dialogue, a thriller that keeps circling back to what happens when the people who wrote the code are no longer around. Screenplay by Kazunori Itô, produced by I.G Tatsunoko. Stream Patlabor: The Movie online on iFILM.
