Synopsis

Avalon (2001) is a science-fiction action film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Mamoru Oshii — the filmmaker behind Ghost in the Shell (1995). Shot entirely in Poland with Polish cast, it stars Małgorzata Foremniak as Ash, a solo player in an illegal combat simulation called Avalon that has taken over daily life in a near-future city.

Players who reach the game's final stage do not come back. Their bodies survive; their minds stay locked inside. Ash quit team play years ago after something went wrong, and lives alone with her dog and her statistics. Then word spreads about a hidden class — Special A — beyond the final level. She goes back in.

Oshii shoots the whole film in desaturated sepia and moves at a pace that has nothing to do with conventional action cinema. The battles are tactical and quiet; the longest sequences are Ash eating dinner or riding a train. The film's real question is not whether she can beat the game, but whether the world outside it offers anything worth returning to. Stream Avalon (2001) online on iFILM.
