Synopsis
The Little Prince (1974) is the musical version of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's beloved book, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A pilot crash-lands deep in the Sahara, and out of the empty dunes walks a small boy from another world — the Little Prince himself.
While the aviator patches his plane and rations his dwindling water, the boy tells his tale: a tiny asteroid, a vain rose he can't stop loving, and a tour of neighboring planets where he met a king with no subjects and a businessman busy counting stars. The songs come from Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, the team behind My Fair Lady. Watch for Bob Fosse's snake-like dance number and Gene Wilder as the Fox who explains that what's essential is invisible to the eye.
Director Stanley Donen, a giant of the old-Hollywood musical, handles the fable gently and never turns it saccharine. It plays for children and for the grown-ups who still remember being children. Stream The Little Prince (1974) online on iFILM.
