Synopsis
Walker (1987) is a political film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Alex Cox and starring Ed Harris as William Walker — the real 19th-century American filibuster who led a private mercenary force into Nicaragua and briefly declared himself its president in 1856.
Cox shot the film in Nicaragua in 1986, at the height of Reagan-era U.S. intervention, and broke the period at every turn: Newsweek magazines, modern cars, and weapons that didn't exist in the 1850s appear alongside men in frock coats and filibusters on horseback. The anachronisms aren't accidents — they're the argument. Walker's 19th-century conquest and the 1980s intervention are framed as the same impulse, repeating. Joe Strummer wrote the score. The film ended Cox's Hollywood career when it failed commercially, which in retrospect looks less like a failure and more like proof it landed. Stream it on iFILM.
