Synopsis
The Horse Soldiers (1959) is a John Ford Civil War western you can watch online on iFILM. John Wayne plays Colonel Marlowe, a hard-edged Union officer; William Holden plays the regimental surgeon Kendall, who thinks Marlowe is reckless with men's lives. They are both right about each other, and neither is willing to say so.
The mission is a deep raid into Confederate territory in 1863: destroy a key rail supply depot at Newton Station before the Confederates can use it. The column rides south through hostile country, hunted from behind, uncertain of what's ahead. A Southern woman named Hannah Hunter overhears the plan and has to come along — Constance Towers plays her with more spine than the cavalry assigned to watch her. Ford shot the picture in Louisiana, and the flat wet landscape gives the march a weariness that studio back-lots couldn't fake.
Ford had made cavalry pictures before — Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon — but this one sits differently. The Civil War setting keeps the heroism complicated, and the Wayne-Holden dynamic runs on genuine friction rather than buddy-movie warmth. Stream The Horse Soldiers (1959) online on iFILM.
