Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
From Hundred of Miles In Outer Space to Seven Miles Beneath the Sea!
Synopsis
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961) is the sci-fi adventure you can watch online on iFILM, where an atomic submarine becomes humanity's last hope. The Van Allen radiation belt has caught fire, and the sky is slowly cooking the Earth alive.
Admiral Nelson, played by Walter Pidgeon, steers the submarine Seaview toward the Mariana Trench with a desperate idea: fire a nuclear missile and blow the runaway belt apart before the planet burns. His crew thinks he's mad. A mutiny brews below decks, and someone aboard is working to sink the mission from the inside. Joan Fontaine, Barbara Eden and Peter Lorre round out the company under the waves.
Irwin Allen's film kicked off a small franchise — three years on, the Seaview sailed into a TV series of the same name that ran four seasons. The effects look quaint by today's standards, but they carry the charm of 1960s pulp science fiction. A solid pick for fans of vintage adventure pictures.
