Synopsis
The Unbelievable Truth (1990) is Hal Hartley's debut indie drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. Josh Hutton comes back to his Long Island hometown after a prison stretch for murder — except nobody can quite agree on what he actually did.
The town runs on rumor. Everyone has a different version of the crime, and the stories breed like gossip at the gas pump. Josh keeps quiet and takes a job fixing cars for a local garage owner. His daughter Audry is a high-schooler who models for cash and is genuinely convinced the world is about to end in nuclear fire. She and the brooding ex-con fall for each other, and the gap between what people say about a man and who he really is cracks wide open.
Hartley shot the film for almost nothing and set the template for nineties American indie: clipped dialogue, deadpan delivery, dry humor edging into the absurd. Adrienne Shelly and Robert John Burke lead, with a young Edie Falco turning up in a small part. It's for arthouse fans who prize irony over plot twists.
