Synopsis

Scarlet (L'Envol, 2023) is a French drama you can watch online on iFILM — Pietro Marcello's loose reworking of Alexander Grin's Russian novel, transplanted to post-WWI Normandy. A widowed veteran, played by Raphaël Thiéry, returns from the front with a newborn daughter and nothing else.

The girl grows up holding onto a fortune-teller's prophecy: a man will come for her from the sky, not the sea. Louis Garrel plays Jean, a wandering aviator who actually shows up and doesn't laugh at her. Marcello shot on archival film stock and wove in documentary footage from the period — the picture genuinely looks old, not merely vintage-filtered, and that specificity earns the fairy-tale ending in a way a slicker production never could.
