Synopsis
The Flight of the Phoenix (1965) is Robert Aldrich's desert survival drama, free to watch online on iFILM. A cargo plane flies into a Sahara sandstorm, loses power and slams into the dunes. Rescue isn't coming — nobody knows where they went down.
A dozen men are left with dwindling water and a wreck that will never fly. Then a tight-lipped aircraft designer floats an absurd plan: strip the good wing off the dead plane and build a smaller one that can actually lift off. Pilot Frank Towns (James Stewart) thinks it's madness and quietly resents the upstart, navigator Lew Moran drowns his guilt, and the heat turns exhausted, frightened men against one another.
Aldrich stages an almost chamber piece out in the open sand — the real plot is the argument over whether to quit or to build. Richard Attenborough, Hardy Krüger, Ernest Borgnine and George Kennedy round out the cast, each carrying his own crack-up. The film landed two Oscar nominations and still belongs among the great survival pictures. Stream The Flight of the Phoenix (1965) online on iFILM.
