Synopsis
Emperor of the North (1973) is Robert Aldrich's brutal Depression-era thriller, free to watch online on iFILM. Across America, jobless men hop freight trains to survive. One conductor refuses to let them — Shack would rather crack a skull than carry a man for free.
Lee Marvin plays A-No. 1, the most respected hobo on the rails, who decides to ride Shack's untouchable train purely to prove it can be done. Ernest Borgnine's conductor patrols his cars with a hammer and a length of chain, and he has never lost. Their feud plays out on rooftops and couplings while a cocky kid called Cigaret (Keith Carradine) tags along, hungry for the same legend without grasping what it costs.
Aldrich turns a simple chase into a grim parable about pride and the price of a man's dignity. The fights are filthy and real, no Hollywood polish, scored by Frank De Vol. If you came for the Marvin-versus-Borgnine collision and the grit of 1970s action, this one delivers.
