Synopsis
Love Is Strange (2014) is a quiet drama from director Ira Sachs that you can watch online on iFILM. Ben and George have shared their lives for thirty-nine years; they finally marry in a Manhattan ceremony. Within days George is dismissed from his job conducting a Catholic school choir — the marriage is the reason, though no one says it plainly.
Without George's income, the apartment goes. Ben moves into his nephew's Brooklyn place and sleeps on the top bunk of a teenager's loft bed. George takes a room across the neighborhood. Two people who have spent nearly four decades in the same space suddenly navigate separate households, separate rhythms, a few city blocks between them. John Lithgow and Alfred Molina bring no sentimentality to this — just the accumulated shorthand of two men who know exactly how the other drinks coffee and what silences mean.
Ira Sachs keeps the film small on purpose. The antagonist here isn't prejudice but practical pressure: rent, income, the fragility of domestic life when one piece shifts. Marisa Tomei is quietly excellent as the nephew's wife holding her own household together. This is a film for anyone who has ever felt the difference between being in love and being able to live it.
