Synopsis
Frankie (2019) is a quietly devastating drama directed by Ira Sachs — watch it online on iFILM. Frankie Jomont, a celebrated French actress, has received a terminal diagnosis. Rather than announce it, she orchestrates one last family gathering in Sintra, Portugal — a town of palaces, clifftops and things nobody has said.
Isabelle Huppert plays Frankie with the economy that makes her inimitable: every glance carries weight she refuses to explain. Brendan Gleeson is the ex-husband navigating old guilt, Greg Kinnear the American boyfriend of her best friend (Marisa Tomey), and her grown son circles the edges of a grief he hasn't been allowed to name yet.
The film premiered in Competition at Cannes 2019. Sachs sets the whole thing across a single long afternoon, letting Sintra's winding lanes keep throwing people into unplanned proximity. Not a film about dying — a film about what people do instead of saying what they mean. Stream Frankie (2019) online on iFILM.
