Synopsis
Oh, Canada (2024) is Paul Schrader's late-career drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Richard Gere stars as Leonard Fife, a celebrated documentarian dying of cancer who sits for one last interview to strip away the myth he built around himself.
Fife is in Montreal, his memory slipping, the camera rolling. He keeps circling back to his youth — the moment he fled the United States for Canada to dodge the Vietnam draft, the women he left, the choices he buried for half a century. His wife Emma (Uma Thurman) watches as each confession chips at the legend he's lived inside. Jacob Elordi plays the younger Fife in those unraveling flashbacks.
Adapted by Schrader from Russell Banks' novel Foregone, the film reunites Gere and the director nearly forty-five years after American Gigolo. It's slow, fractured and unsentimental — a portrait of a man who would rather die honest than admired. If you go for confessional, interior cinema over plot, this one rewards the patience.
