Synopsis
Woochi: The Demon Slayer (2009) is a Korean fantasy that you can watch online on iFILM, mixing martial-arts action with broad comedy. Five hundred years ago, during the Joseon era, a magical flute was split in two and entrusted to a Taoist scholar and a Buddhist monk. Then the monk turns up dead and his half is stolen.
The blame falls on his cocky apprentice, Woochi — a charming trickster who works spells for sport and shows little respect for his elders. As punishment he's sealed inside a painting along with his loyal dog, who has been turned into a man. Centuries pass. The demons once locked away with the flute spill into modern-day Seoul, and the heavenly gods are forced to release the rascal to clean up the mess. Kang Dong-won plays the lead.
Director Choi Dong-hoon, who later struck gold with The Thieves, throws ancient Taoist sorcery against 21st-century city streets and never drops the jokes. The result is a loud, colorful blockbuster where flying monks brawl with shapeshifters and the hero swaggers through every scene. It's a treat for anyone who likes Asian fantasy with a wink.
