Synopsis
if.... (1968) is Lindsay Anderson's incendiary British drama — watch it online on iFILM. The film gave Malcolm McDowell his first screen role and took the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1969, landing as one of the sharpest pieces of counter-culture cinema the UK ever produced.
The setting is a traditional English boarding school where the social order runs on cruelty. Senior prefects bully younger boys with the institution's quiet approval; teachers are present but useless. Mick Travis — McDowell with a coiled-spring energy that would soon define A Clockwork Orange — watches, endures, and eventually decides to push back. Hard. Anderson shoots in a mix of colour and black-and-white, and the film's notorious final sequence refuses to tell you whether what you're seeing is real or fantasy. That ambiguity is the point.
Released just as the protest movements of 1968 were peaking across Europe, if.... arrived as a diagnosis, not a provocation. It remains the clearest cinematic ancestor of British punk — a film that treats institutions not as backdrops but as the actual villain. Stream if.... (1968) online on iFILM.
