Slow West

Slow West (2015) is a lean frontier western you can watch online on iFILM. Jay Cavendish, a 17-year-old Scot, has crossed an ocean and now drifts across the American West chasing the girl he loves.

Along the way he falls in with Silas, a flinty bounty hunter played by Michael Fassbender, who offers protection for a fee. The catch: there's a price on Jay's beloved and her father, and a gang led by Payne (Ben Mendelsohn) is already on the trail. The boy sees a love story. Everyone else sees a hunt. The gap between those two readings is where the film lives.

Writer-director John Maclean's debut runs just 84 minutes and trades Montana's wide skies for the strange light of New Zealand standing in for the frontier. It won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Best for viewers who like their westerns dry, sad and shot through with deadpan absurdity rather than wall-to-wall gunfire.
