Synopsis
Bright Lights, Big City (1988) is James Bridges' drama of burnout and grief that you can watch online on iFILM. By day Jamie Conway checks facts at a glossy magazine; by night he vanishes into Manhattan's clubs.
His wife, a model, has wired divorce papers from Paris. His mother is recently dead and he cannot sit with it. So he chases cocaine and dawn instead, egged on by his reckless friend Tad (Kiefer Sutherland), who treats self-destruction like a night out. Michael J. Fox drops his nice-guy image to play a young man quietly coming apart.
Adapted from Jay McInerney's cult novel, the film reads the 1980s as one long hangover. Phoebe Cates and Dianne Wiest turn up in the margins. There is no big rescue here, only the slow, dreaded moment of recognizing yourself. Stream Bright Lights, Big City (1988) online on iFILM.
