Synopsis
Bee Season (2005) is an American family drama from Scott McGehee and David Siegel, available to watch online on iFILM. Eleven-year-old Eliza can spell the longest words without breaking a sweat — and that quiet gift slowly pulls her family apart.
As the girl advances toward the National Spelling Bee, her father Saul, a religious-studies professor, reads something mystical into her talent and starts initiating her into the secrets of Kabbalah. Her mother Miriam withdraws inward, carrying an old childhood wound she's never named. Meanwhile her older brother Aaron, starved of their father's attention, drifts toward another faith and grows close to a young Hare Krishna devotee. Richard Gere plays Saul, Juliette Binoche is Miriam, and newcomer Flora Cross carries the film as Eliza.
Adapted from Myla Goldberg's novel, this isn't really a story about a child prodigy. It's a slow, watchful study of how a parent's obsession with a kid's "specialness" exposes the cracks a family has spent years talking around. Quiet, intimate, made for a thoughtful evening.
