Synopsis
Only the River Flows (河边的错误, 2023) is a Chinese crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. A rainy provincial town, 1995. An elderly woman is found dead by the river, and the case lands on detective Ma Zhe, played by Zhu Yilong, one of mainland China's biggest screen stars.
His superiors want a culprit, and an arrest comes fast — too fast. While his colleagues toast a closed file, Ma Zhe snags on small details that refuse to line up. The deeper he digs, the less solid the truth becomes: suspects multiply, the logic of the investigation starts to crumble, and the line between chasing a killer and chasing his own obsession quietly dissolves. This is not a tidy whodunit with a neat reveal — it's a slow walk into fog where an answer may never arrive.
Director Wei Shujun adapted a Yu Hua novella and shot it on grainy 16mm, premiering the film in Cannes' Un Certain Regard. One for viewers who prefer bleak arthouse and neon dread over a clean resolution. Stream Only the River Flows online on iFILM.
