Synopsis
Don Camillo: Monsignor (1961) is an Italian comedy you can watch online on iFILM — the fifth film in the Don Camillo series, directed by Carmine Gallone, once again starring Fernandel and Gino Cervi.
Don Camillo has been elevated to monsignor. Peppone has risen to the Italian Senate. Yet the moment both men set foot back in Brescello, all that institutional dignity evaporates. The argument this time concerns an old chapel the local council has earmarked for demolition — housing is needed, the bureaucrats say. The priest sees it differently. The old rivalry picks up without missing a beat.
The series, adapted from Giovanni Guareschi's widely-read novels, ran through the 1950s on the near-perfect chemistry between Fernandel's rubber-faced sincerity and Cervi's cheerful communist bluster. This fifth entry is the gentlest of the bunch — more of a fond homecoming than a full-blooded clash — but the two leads make it worth the visit. Stream Don Camillo: Monsignor (1961) online on iFILM.
