Synopsis
"Don Camillo in Moscow" (Il compagno Don Camillo, 1965) is an Italian-French comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director Luigi Comencini takes the series' beloved frenemies — the stubborn village priest Don Camillo, played by Fernandel, and his communist mayor rival Peppone, played by Gino Cervi — and ships them both off to the Soviet Union.
Peppone is leading an official delegation of Italian communists on a fraternal visit. Don Camillo was not invited. He joined anyway: beard shaved, priest's cassock swapped for civilian clothes, party card in hand. The ideological chaperones watching the group stand no real chance against a man who has been outwitting a communist mayor for years.
The fifth and final entry in the Don Camillo series, adapted from Giovannino Guareschi's stories, the film plays its Soviet backdrop for gentle absurdity — bureaucracy clashing with human nature, and two sworn opponents discovering they understand each other better than either would admit.
