Synopsis
Fudoh: The New Generation (極道戦国志 不動, 1996) is a Japanese yakuza crime film from director Takashi Miike — watch it online on iFILM. The film opens with a family business decision: patriarch Fudoh beheads his teenage son before the assembled clan bosses to settle a territorial dispute. His youngest, Riki, is there watching. Nobody thinks to ask what the child makes of it.
Ten years later, Riki is a calm, well-liked high school student who runs a covert gang of teenage killers working to dismantle his father's organization piece by piece. Shosuke Tanihara plays Riki with such practiced blankness that nearly every scene carries a low-level dread. Miike was already producing several films a year by this point; Fudoh is one of his sharpest early genre experiments — part dark comedy, part revenge thriller, and one of the films that introduced Western audiences to his work.
