Synopsis
The Thirst for Gold (La Soif de l'or, 1993) is a French comedy from Gérard Oury you can watch online, built around one gloriously greedy scheme. Urbain Donnadieu loves money and nothing else. Years of skimming his construction firm have bought him a fortune in gold bars, and now he wants it all safely tucked away in a Swiss bank.
His method is shameless: the gold is sealed inside the walls of a model house riding on a trailer — a suitcase with a false bottom the size of a cottage. Urbain (Christian Clavier) sets off with his equally money-hungry Granny Zézette in tow. The catch is that his tax-inspector wife Fleurette and a bitter ex-chauffeur have caught wind of the loot, and both will do anything to grab it.
Oury, the man behind several French comedy classics, spins a farce where everyone double-crosses everyone over the same pile of bullion. Clavier plays the miser with such relish you almost root for him. Easy, old-school fun for fans of vintage French comedy. Stream The Thirst for Gold (1993) online on iFILM.
