Buffet Froid

Buffet froid (1979) is a pitch-black French comedy directed by Bertrand Blier — watch it online on iFILM. Gérard Depardieu plays Alphonse Tram, an unemployed drifter who strikes up a conversation with a stranger in a deserted metro station one night and later finds the man stabbed.

Alphonse confesses his possible involvement to his new neighbour, Inspector Morvandieu — played with magnificent detachment by Bernard Blier. The inspector takes the confession in stride. No arrest, no paperwork, just two lonely men who seem to share an unspoken tolerance for chaos. Jean Carmet and Michel Serrault complete this odd little triangle, each bringing their own brand of cheerful moral vacancy.
